Feed Vacuum and How to Use It

by Jeffery Reid on Sep.22, 2009, under Misc

If you already have a show/RSS feed outside of Mevio then you may want to simply use our Feed Vacuum to load all of your content into your Producer account and Show channel.

The instructions are straightforward, but will take some knowledge of XML in order to add one line of code to your feed so that our system can pick up the content.

How To:

  1. From your Show page, click "Edit", then click "Append episodes from feed" to access the Feed Vacuum. This is where you will submit your RSS feed once you add the item in steps 2) & 3) below.

  2. Copy the “<a href” tag from within the “Important notice” box.
    • Open your feeds existing XML file and paste the “<a href” tag into one of the posts within the XML. Save it.

After pasting the tag in, your feed should have an entry that looks similar to the following:

FEED VACUUM NOTES:

  1. The Feed Vacuum is a ONE TIME use tool. After you load all of your episode archives you will not need to use the Feed Vacuum again. If you do use it a second time you will end up with duplicate episodes loaded to your show.
  2. If the Feed Vacuum is working properly after you submit your RSS feed you will see a progress message in the upper right of the screen.
  3. Your episodes will be added to your Show page slowly. Each episode is being transcoded and will become visible after the file has completed the transcoding process.
  4. In some cases you may need to use a special “code wrapper” to properly expose the XML to the Feed Vacuum.
  5. If you try the steps above and the Feed Vacuum does not appear to be working, try using code in this format:

Mevio {Mevio-1b06c0a0a88b1d2dexxxxf689c375d7c } A collection of awesome waves and big wipeouts.

How to Embed a Dynamically Updating Channel

by Jeffery Reid on Sep.04, 2009, under Misc

For embedding a Dynamic Channels that displays the most current items in their current order whenever it’s accessed.

Details

  • Get the embed code for any channel from Mevio
  • Then, you will have to edit the code in two places to remove the references to "cMediaId=XXXXXXXX%26" (example: "cMediaId=6878671%26" ). The cMediaID value refers to the specific episode you were watching when you chose to embed your channel. The default behavior is to always start playing that episode in the embed. Removing the reference results in playing back all items from your channel in the order you currently have them.
  • Stated again: the resulting embed code will then play your channel from the beginning rather than a specific item from your channel.
  • Here is an example of it working: http://apologia.typepad.com/reid/2009/07/ic-tech-channel-dynamic.html
  • Note: test this each time you use it since if you miss just one character it won’t work at all.

How to Embed a Dynamically Updating Show

by Jeffery Reid on Sep.04, 2009, under Misc

If you want to embed your show on your home page so it always plays the very latest episode remove the reference to "sMediaId=XXXXXXXX%26" from the TWO places you’ll find it in the embed code.

Details:

Following are instructions for embedding a dynamic show.

For embedding a Dynamic Show that displays the most current episode whenever it’s accessed.

  • Get the embed code for any show from Mevio
  • Then, you will have to edit the code in TWO places to remove the references to "sMediaId=XXXXXXXX%26" (example: "sMediaId=6878671%26" ). The sMediaID value refers to a specific episode in your show playing at the time you clicked the “embed” button in the player. Removing it results in playing back all episodes from your show with the most current one listed first.
  • The resulting embed code will then play your show rather than a specific episode from your show.
  • Here is an example of it working: http://apologia.typepad.com/reid/2009/07/ic-places-instant-movie-review.html I embedded this weeks ago but its playing the latest episode
  • Note: test this each time you use it since if you miss just one character it won’t work at all.

Select Your Account

The Twitter settings are managed from your Account control (not your show control). Go to your account control to edit your settings by selecting your account from the Me On Mevio menu. It’s the first menu selection and the first item in the sub-menu.
